Wyse Partners with Ethan Group and VMware to Announce Partnership in Australia Promoting Energy Savings Using Thin Client Technology and Desktop Virtualisation
SAN JOSE, Calif. –
09/22/2007 -
Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today presented to Australian CIOs their figures on the cost and energy savings obtainable by using thin client technology for desktop virtualisation. Wyse partnered with virtualisation company VMware, and IT value-added reseller and integrator Ethan Group, to present their response to the recent Australian Computer Society (ACS) policy statement on reducing emissions in the ICT industry.
Ethan Group, a Wyse and VMware VDI reseller, recently conducted the first ICT carbon emissions audit which exposed that the industry generated 7.94 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, or around the same as generated by the aviation or construction industries, accounting for 1.52% of total Australian emissions. The audit found that one of the biggest consumers of power in the ICT industry was from employees personal workstation equipment (usually PCs or notebooks) that are left on for either 12 hours a day or 24/7.
The ACS in their August 2007 policy statement on emissions, which was based on the findings of the Ethan group audit, recommended a number of initiatives to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions from ICT users, which included the use of virtualisation technology to reduce the number of servers in use, and implementing desktop virtualisation using thin clients. The ACS policy says in part: Desktop virtualisation takes server virtualisation further by using ultra-small, secure thin clients on the desktop, linking the thin clients to their own virtual desktop machines residing on servers. With desktop environments consolidated within the data centre, firms can deliver secure, isolated desktops that consume less energy. Each thin client is centrally managed and accessible from anywhere on the network. Desktop virtualisation with thin clients allows firms to:
reduce PC maintenance costs; increase security; deploy full PC desktops on centralised servers; set up workgroups and entire department quickly; reduce energy requirements of running desktop environments.
In August, Wyse announced their own EarthSmart Computing initiative that opens dialogue with partners, such as VMware and Ethan Group, users, and government to reduce waste in the ICT industry. The first step is to continue its efforts in developing and producing the worlds greenest thin clients which have the smallest environmental footprint possible. The companys R&D efforts continue to focus on developing products which consume less power (less than any other PC or thin client), last longer than traditional PCs, have fewer parts to recycle and dispose, as well as meet the most stringent environmental standards including ISO 14001, ROHS certification and WEEE directive.
Commenting on behalf of Wyse in Australia, Anna Soriano channel director Asia Pacific said, Wyse has claimed for some time that the use of desktop virtualisation and thin client technology results in compelling savings. The end result is a dramatically lower carbon footprint and a technology solution which is truly environmentally friendly.
Wyse is excited to be partnering with Ethan Group to be able to deliver proven thin client solutions to Australian users, and with leading desktop virtualisation technology provider VMware. Based on the audit findings and the ACS policy, we envisage substantial energy and cost savings will be quickly realised as users embrace thin client technology in virtual desktop scenarios, said Ms Soriano.
Ethan group managing director Andrew Rayment welcomed the partnership with Wyse stating that corporate Australia would benefit from the findings of the survey and the ACS recommendations.
With our systems skills in designing and implementing desktop virtualisation and thin client solutions using VMware and Wyse products, we can help implement smart and sound IT practices, Rayment said.
